Role description

The Project Engineer (mechanical, piping, process or equipment) receives authority and is directly responsible to the process group team lead. The Project Engineer is to participate in the planning and execution of a construction project as part of a project team. The Project Engineer shall assist in planning and coordinating the activities concerned with the construction of structures, facilities, and systems of a construction project.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Study Contract Documents to thoroughly understand scope of work and explain plans and contract requirements to administrative and field staff.
  • Confirm that all required permits and licenses have been obtained.
  • Be responsible for the management of a variety of project documentation, including, but not limited to, scope documents, drawings, specifications, processing and review of submittals and writing and coordinating of request for information.
  • Assist with and/or be responsible for coordination of work activities and other project requirements with consultants, subcontractors and other entities.
  • Assist in and/or negotiate revisions, changes and additions to contractual agreements with subcontractors and suppliers.
  • Assist in preparation of budget estimates and progress and cost tracking reports.
  • Confer with supervisory personnel, contractors, and design professionals to discuss and resolve matters such as work procedures, complaints, and construction problems.
  • Confer with the Superintendent to take appropriate actions to deal with the results of delays, bad weather, or emergencies at the construction site.
  • Attend weekly job site meetings and maintain/revise interval planning requirements to satisfy job conditions. Assist Project Manager with evaluation of changes and discuss impact on job completion. Assist in review and updating of the project schedule with Project Manager and Superintendent and assist in the evaluation of effects of changes on the project work plan.
  • Inspect and review the project(s) to monitor compliance with the Contract Documents, building and safety codes, and other requirements and regulations.
  • Assist in the initiation and pricing of change orders and claims.
  • Review job charges (Material, Sub-contract, Equipment Rental, Labor, etc.).
  • Participate in the investigation of damages, accidents, or delays at construction sites.
  • Close-out project with Superintendent and confirm all required documentation has been submitted/provided to the Owner.


Person Specification:

Knowledge & Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least ten years of formal engineering or an equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience.
  • Knowledge of construction (process, piping, electrical, equipment) means and methods, scheduling and cost control procedures, general contract, general conditions, subcontract documents, drawings and specifications.
  • Specific knowledge of Mechanical and / or Electrical Systems.
  • Thorough knowledge of building information modelling and its use in coordination of the Mechanical and Electrical systems and other project systems.



  • Significant mechanical and piping experience in industrial construction of large chemical plants;
  • Similar role covered at least in last two projects, of comparable size;
  • Experience working on main contractor side.


Skills and Abilities:

  • Fluent English;
  • Knowledge of the Dutch and German language – preferred;
  • Excellent IT and analytical skills;
  • Excellent communications and interpersonal skills;
  • Strong interpersonal, team-oriented skills, self-motivation and direction, with a strong bias toward timely performance and problem resolution;
  • Attention to detail, strong communications and interpersonal skills.
